Still never post on this LiveJournal.

Blogging goodness is at:

7:30pm: This Livejournal/RSS Feed
If you are subscribed to this Livejournal by RSS, you've probably noticed by now that I haven't been updating this at all.

Today I have created a new RSS feed that pulls directly from my Blog that RSS feed is at:

http://chris-karath.com/blog/chriskarathblog.xml

That link above is not real time either... but it's likely to be, right now I have to manually click a button that compiles the RSS XML file but I plan on fully automating it in the near future.

So if you are subscribed to this RSS feed, please update your subscription to the link above.

all for now,

Chris

9:57pm: Yet another infrequent update
I almost never update this LiveJournal. Anyway, for maybe the 3 of you that might be subscribed to this, remember all the blogging action is actually happening on my own domain at:

http://chris-karath.com/blog/blog0702.php

5th January 2007

9:46pm: Singin' the Zefrank.org RSS blues.
So I'm playing around in Zefrank's zefrank.org and there's this blog update section and I think, "Sweet, a blog update section, I've got a blog, I'll enter my domain goodness in it...."

But the org overload code won't let me link directly to "my real blog" because it only recognizes fancy pants blogs that are properly coded and have their rss-whatsis and whatnot set-up properly and well my blog don't play that way.

See, I'm kicking it oldschool on my blog, I use a text editor and everything, and I don't know nothin' about setting up no fancy pants rss properly. So's that's why I have this LiveJournal account so that I can use its' hoity toity rss code to point to my actual blog.

So if there are any Sports Racers out there that don't mind clicking a few times you can follow the above link to my real bloggednessness, thanks for clickin with me. Word.

Live Journal, RSSing so I don't have to.

12:27am: 1/2/07 Blog Update
Wasting way too much time on the blog the last week or so...

Lots of toy pics so far in January.

And a pretty big post of links back at the end of this past December

So, take a look at those.

24th December 2006

3:34pm: I've got my own domain now
Hey, my site's moved to chris-karath.com (don't forget the "-")

I'm still posting in the same old static text based web page format blog (for now). But the new address is neat.

I have added a Forum that's all PHP/MySQL/Vanilla based and spiffy, you should go there and post things on it.

I can do all this RSS stuff on my new site now, and as soon as I do, I might discontinue the LJ posting. But for now, if you are keeping up via RSS, this is still the spot.

Merry Christmas Eve and all that.

» I bought something from Toys R Us online a week ago. I've been getting daily email ads from them ever since. Today they raised it to two emails a day. I'd be happy to get an email from them once a week (or maybe 5 a month if something big is happening) but twice a day? Who needs that kindof spam? I was going to send them a short email to that effect, but they have no visible easily discoverable email address. They do have a 1-800 number, which they reccomend you call, and I did. I made about 10 selections thru the voicemail maze, and then was promptly put on indefinite hold with no human contact whatsoever. Affter listening to a Christmas version of the Toys R Us Jingle a half dozen times I hung up.

Yeah, a silly amount of effort I suppose to register a minor complaint, but I do like to pretend that somewhere in large corporations there's another *person* on the other end of the transaction. Mostly of course, as in this case, it's just interaction with an inhuman bureaucratic system and it's unlikely for a comment made to even have chance of registering individually let alone in aggregate, but again sometimes I like to pretend that isn't the case. Anyway, they did have a link where you can opt out entirely from their emails so I did that.

And don't take the above as too much of a system complaint. I'm well aware that the inhuman bureaucratic system process way of doing business is what keeps prices so nice and low. Most people don't care for the interaction and the system left under it's own will, in a case like this, optimizes toward the masses. Say La'vee (sp).

» Martin Nodell died Saturday morning. He was the creator of the original Golden Age Green Lantern (As well as co-creator of the Pillsbury Doughboy). The Silver Age Green Lantern was my introduction to the character, but of course the Silver Age version would never have been if not for Mr. Nodell's Golden Age creation. He was 91. The emerald flame of the Green Lantern character shall continue to burn, far far into the future, as good a memorial as any, I think.

Speaker StandSpeaker Stand Base » Finally stained my speaker stands. Pics at right. I rambled on about these a little bit at the end of last month. The angle makes it look abit out of scale, but the base is pretty much the same size as the top.

» Like half the comic-blogosphere I just created a Comicspace account. It's Myspace for comics people. At the moment there isn't much to do there other than upload a picture, fill-out a brief text only section, collect "friends" and do messaging. Basically, it is the barest amount of functionality required to call itself a Myspace clone. It will be interesting to see if they come up with anything comic specific to make it worthwhile. They're certainly going to have to open up the personalization abit.

» Always one more thing. Always something more. Everything else, just a blur. That is life they'd say. I'd say differently, if I thought the alternative could be contemplated. But that ain't what's on tv, and for what I'd say to make any sense, you'd already agree, most of the way, anyway, cause they're ain't hairpin curves on this highway, so here we are, one more thing, always something more, everything else is just a blur.

» Watched Superman II: the Donner Cut and Superman Returns Friday. Some SPOILER comments below:

Superman II: the Donner Cut - The biggest impression I'm left with having watched this is that the majority of "cheese" has been removed. The screen test scene inserts are fine, however the hotel scene played better in the "original version" of the movie, as far as I'm concerned. There were probably just as many scenes I liked removed from this movie as scenes I didn't like, It's kindof a wash really when it comes down to it. Worth having and watching if you are a comic geek, less so if you are not. Probably the highest budget "fan-re-cut" ever created. It's ok. (Oh and for those that care: The S-Shield scene is gone, but you get the spin the world backwards a second time now.)

Superman Returns - This is my third viewing of this film. I saw it on a standard theatre screen, imax and now the small screen. I really like this film, but I'm not sure it stands up very well to multiple viewings. During this third go through, it's noticible how much time these characters stand around thinking and "having" moments. I found alot of that suspenseful the first time, but on multiple viewings it just seems like the film is drawn out longer than it needs to be.

I found the effects dimished somewhat in the TV set scale. There's such detail in this film and such expansive horizons and sets that the big screen was really where this film dazzled. It's still good on TV but the theatre was really the place to see this one.

Also I may be dense, but I still don't understand the whole "Father becomes the son" thing, at least not in the context of this movie.

Probably a comment or two more when I have a chance to watch the extras and the director commentaries on the the films.

» I'm not a gamer-guy. Not very good at video games at all. A friend of mine got the Wii and last week I played Rayman: Raving Rabbids. That game is fun as all hell. » I happened to flip on the television and catch the tail-end of a a movie called Mindwalk, (1990). Through the power of DVR, I hit record and the machine grabbed the program from the begining, from whence I commenced to view the program. Not a drama in the traditional sense and not a documentary, the film follows the conversation of a politician, played by a younger Law and Order's Sam Waterson, a Poet, John Heard, and a Physicist, actress Liv Ullmann. The film follows this trio as they walk through castles and picturesque beaches on a French island. They talk about many topics, most of which build toward a discussion on Systems Theory. Very much a relaxed walking intellectual conversation in the visual traditition of the West Wing or Studio 60, minus any of those shows franticness. Alot of the same ground as What the Bleep Do We know is covered in this film, although it is much more mainstream and nowhere near as new agey.

The movie aired on Flix when I watched it. Acording to MeeVee (A TV Guide-like website) it will air at the below times and channels over the next 12 days (3 days actually):
Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006 12:15 PM SHOFAM Sunday, Nov. 26, 2006 5:20 AM SHOFAM Monday, Nov. 27, 2006 9:45 AM TMC2XE Monday, Nov. 27, 2006 12:45 PM TMC2XW

I did not see it on Netflix. It is available on Amazon, on VHS only, for $64 (Which is abit more than you'll want to pay unless you really have money to burn.) I'd try to catch it on one of the above showings over the next few days if you enjoy this sort of thing. It's good stuff.

» I got a basic surround sound speaker system at Meijer's Thanksgiving sale yesterday. Today I built some stands for the speakers. I was very suprized at the difference putting all the speakers at the same ear-level height made. Yesterday I had them on various counters and surfaces and I did not think the surround experience was very effective. Putting all the speakers at the proper height and properly spaced made a much bigger difference than I would have anticipated. Good Thing.

I'll post pictures of the wood stands at a future time after I stain them.

There's a good deal on a computer, a couple external harddrives, a camcorder, and I can always use an SD card or two. Anyway, I got there at 1am and forget-a-bout it. Here's how HarperCollins describes the book: "The novel, reminiscent of The Last Days of Pompeii, shows the pomp and grandeur of a doomed world, the politics and struggles, brave heroes and traitors, and finally the escape of one baby. The story features Jor-El and Lara (Superman's parents), as well as famous villains General Zod and Brainiac, and how a whole planet came to be destroyed. In almost 70 years of Superman, this complete story has never been told." The book is targeted for a fall 2007 release. * A National Education Association online pol

Saw Casino Royale, the new James Bond tonight. Very much enjoyed it. It's very much an Ultimate Bond in the Marvel Comics sense. The Bond formula is intact (minus one major and a couple minor missing beats). The camp has been largely stripped out. There are some dry, subtle bits of humor, and although I'm a fan of Bond camp in general, I didn't miss it in the context of this reimagined Bond. Downsides: The Ford scene, more 'naked' Bond than naked Bond girls and a certain missing letter of the alphabet. Overall, Good Stuff, Go See on the Big Screen.

» Tina Fey was on Jon Stewart's Daily Show Monday night. It was not as electric an interview as I would have thought it to be. It did not seem that Jon Stewart was a fan of Fey. He asked her mostly about Alec Baldwin, didn't discuss her previous fake news anchorship at all, even when she brought it up. He also introduced her as an actress. It seemed odd that he didn't add writer to that intro. Fey was pretty good during the segment though and even with all that, it was still neat to see both at the same desk. Photos below.

» This is a little old, but I took a quick look on Youtube and I didn't see it up there, so for those that are interested, below are the Green Lantern and Superhero References from Grey's Anatomy a couple weeks ago. (Comic fans aren't going to like Karev in this snippet. If you are unfamiliar with the show, Karev is pretty much always played as a jerk, so I wouldn't take his comments in the clip too personally.)

» Got a really good book on Figure sculpting from Amazon.com yesterday: Creating Life-Like Figures in Polymer Clay: A Step-By-Step Guide (Paperback) $18.48. I don't know much about the topic, but this book is filled with step by step photos and diagrams. As a book at least, it's very well put together. Good Stuff.

» So, um, did anyone watch Meet the Press today? What was the deal with Elizabeth Dole? Aren't Senators supposed to be the deliberative body that let people talk in turns? Tim Russert was at a complete loss (although clearly amused at the absurdity of the situation) as to how to get her to stop talking. The Dems on the panel for the most part handled the situation with grace. Staying on message is one thing, but not even letting the moderator get a word in, is taking things abit far.

» Ordered some things on Amazon.com today. Played with their various shipping speed and delivery option combinations. Also noticed that it makes a difference what you put in your order, as one of the books I was getting would have delayed everything else by a month under most of their shipping options. Anyway, not a positive process, they would seem big enough to be able to streamline the situation abit. (Yeah I know they have 1-Click and all, but in my situation that would have pretty much been the worst option in price/delivery combination)

» I know this news is a couple days old, but to everyone who posted a negative post to their blog, made a negative comment somewhere on a message board, complained to a friend, or whatever, thank you for helping make this not happen. Internet, you're full of heroes and you've done good on this!

» Battlestar Galactica, very good last night, very good show. 30 Rock, surprisingly funnier each week; they did a great brief parody of Studio 60 this week: "Did we just walk in a circle?" "Good Walk and Talk". Heroes, still loving Heroes, good show.

» Bill O'Reilly vs. David Letterman. Below is a CBS provided to YouTube clip from last Friday's Late Show.

Letterman: Let me ask you a question — was there more heinous, more dangerous violence taking place before in Iraq, or is there more heinous, dangerous violence taking place now in Iraq?

O'Reilly: Oh, stop it. Saddam Hussein slaughtered 300,000 to 400,000 people, all right, so knock it off… It isn't so black and white, Dave — it isn't, 'We're a bad country. Bush is an evil liar.' That's not true.

Letterman: I didn't say he was an evil liar. You're putting words in my mouth, just the way you put artificial facts in your head!

New Comic Wednesday yesterday, I got a Flash Hat.

» Haven't talkeed comics much on my blog lately, because I'm so far behind. I read them chronologically and yesterday I just reached Justice League of America #1 and Wonder Woman #2. » Played Justice League Heroes for PS2 this week (Actually I watched the game more than I played, as two friends with greater Video Game proficiency than I did most of the playing.) Neat game, too bad it's not 4 player like Marvel Legends. Even though I'm a DC guy, I'm looking forward to next week's release of Marvel Alliance more. M.A. is 4 player, which means my friends can concentrate on solving the levels and I can just button mash!
